I Will Never Give Up or Exhaust
Binge watching TV shows on Netflix is one of my guilty pleasures (aka secret single behavior). I throw shows onto my queue with little regard to the fact that I have the same 24hrs in my day as everyone else. I don’t know where I am going to have the time to actually get caught up with the length of my list, but that is neither here nor there.
This is a tale of how the pieces fell into place perfectly ending up with me and a song that I can’t get out of my head.

The story starts with me on the couch watching Netflix instead of working on my end of unit paper for a class. What can I say? The motivation was not there to write the paper, but oh, I had motivation galore to watch episode after episode of Teen Wolf. You read that right. I watch Teen Wolf. What can I say, I am a fangirl… So, I had to catch up with the remainder of Season 1 and then Season 2, I am determined to get through what Netflix has then onto plunder the episodes on MTV.com since they have season 3.
Off topic–I had started watching this show ages ago, but there’s a lot to be said about the power of mind space affecting perception so when I started watching the show, my mind just wasn’t in the right place, and I had a hard time getting into it, even though at the core I knew I should like it. So I put it on hiatus and moved on to other shows on my list. Fast forward some indeterminate amount of time to this past weekend and there I was, on the couch, remote in hand and my eyes glued to the screen. I don’t even think I moved to eat dinner… that probably sounds more pathetic than epic. Oh well!
So eventually, I upgrade the viewing venue from the TV in the living room to the TV I decided I had to have in the bedroom. Putting one there meant I was unpacking another box (hurrah for progress, no matter how small!) and I could move my Roku into the bedroom to watch Netflix from the comfort of my bed. I am grateful for the little things… I steadily plowed through episode after episode until I was in Season 2.
If you haven’t watched the series, giving the specifics is irrelevant, if you have, this might be of interest, but it’s the third episode, “Ice Pick”, and I think because of what transpired it may continue to be my favorite episode in this season for this reason alone.
I watch shows, but also listen to them. Soundtrack is important, it can make or break the mood of a scene. Interestingly enough Teen Wolf is produced by MTV, you know, that channel that USED to show music videos? So it comes as little surprise that they would use their shows as a vehicle to break out new music and artists.
So there’s a scene in the show, the plot has been steadily building to this fight sequence at the ice rink and then there is this sound… and I can’t describe what it sounded like, but as soon as I heard it I knew it was the perfect choice for that scene. It wasn’t a fight song, it wasn’t an intense song in the traditional action sequence sense… it was cerebral. The rhythm was evocative of an thuggish knife fight in an underground parking garage, it felt forbidden like Fight Club. I was in love. I had to have this song on my soundtrack.
Yes, my life has a soundtrack. I have had this idea since I was twelve and I got my first portable music device for my birthday: a yellow Sony Walkman. I loved that thing. Those headphones never left my ears, my cassettes were worn out. The songs were varied and mood driven, like the best tracks in a Hollywood movie.
I still live that way. I have playlists for everything. I shazammed (new verb, just made it up 😉 ) the song. I thank the creators of Shazam every time I use it. I LOVE that app (and SoundHound), because nothing drives me crazy more than hearing a song and not knowing who sang it, or played it, and never hearing it again on purpose. Apps that will listen to the song and identify it for me? Genius!
The song? Fear.
The artist? Truth.
The hunt is on. I check YouTube. Nothing. I check the library catalog, nothing. Dang it! I go to Amazon. I figure, I can’t hear the song, and it apparently has no video, it’s too obscure or new for the library to have the CD, I am going to have to buy the song. No biggie. I find it, it costs 99 cents. I buy it, I have it! But I am not satisfied with just the song. I have to know more about the artist. Where did they come from? What else have they written/created? Why? Because the lyrics are brilliant. Just brilliant. And they speak to me. I want to know them. Ever have a moment where you see things that are so coincidental that you think you may have made a mistake?
I googled the artist and there was a moment when I think I swore I saw a search result pop up that was for this artist in Texas. I thought, maybe that just a mistake because I am obviously in Texas, that’s not possible. So I keep looking. I find nothing more, so I give up. Move on to other projects (still not working on my paper) but I do other homework related items.
Then I get back on the computer to check the internet one more time. I stumble upon another site that included the album notes for the CD the track came from. What do you know, it gives his twitter handle, so I get on Twitter and my eyes bug out of my head because sure enough, homeboy lives in Texas. But not just anywhere in this big ass state, in the same danged county where I live?! What are the flipping chances?
I don’t care that he is young. I give him mad props. So yeah, I am totally following him on twitter. I wanna hear what else he’s got going on. This guy is going to go places I think. I’m getting in on the ground floor.
Fear – Truth. Listen on Spotify.
This song is on repeat on my phone. All day, every day. Until I get tired of it.
