No more days of mixed tapes and CDs, now we have streaming services and playlists on Spotify. But I wondered, what songs would come up if I hit random play, aka shuffle, on all the Liked songs on my account? What are the first 10 songs that play? And what would it say about the kind of music I listen to? Music can help to tell a story. Curating playlists is almost like a hobby so here goes with the uncurated playlist of my life:
I think everyone must have at least one Twenty One Pilots song in their backlog. I’m actually surprised it was this one that popped up and not Stressed Out.
I will admit I was surprised this one appeared. I think it’s a case of my “liking” the whole album instead of just Believer because come on, who doesn’t like that song? And anyone who says they don’t is a liar liar pants on fire 🔥
This takes me back. Edie Brickell was one of the first CDs I owned. Although I may have received her Rubberbands Shooting at the Moon album as a birthday gift. Boho is in, everything old is new again. But I was boho before it was cool to be boho.
I like the lyrics I thought I heard rather than the ones that are actually in the chorus. It’s why I had this song on repeat for a bit when it first came out. I have a coworker who thinks The Weeknd is evil and refuses to listen to any of his music. I am ambivalent. This was a bop for a minute though 🤷🏻♀️
I like all kinds of music. Particularly quirky songs really get me. This song/artist probably struck me because it reminded me of the band Lush. I was really into Lush when I was in my late teens. I had Gala and Spooky on CD (who am I kidding, I still have those CDs lol) and listened to them on repeat when there was no repeat button. Hummed the shit out of De-Luxe on a through hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail. Good times 😄
8. Djonga (Slavery) – Salif Keita, Chucho Merchan, James Shearman, Nick Ingman
I have a thing for adaptations of Jane Austen novels. This particular version of Mansfield Park has long been a favorite of mine.
I double dare you to say something bad about Gorillaz. Their songs are earworms. Especially this one. I love to listen to it when I need to concentrate. Got me through some tough times when I went back to college to finish my degree.
10 songs are not quite enough to dive deep into the long list of likes I have on Spotify. The benefit of playlists is being able to anticipate the soundtrack for the moment. I don’t often hit shuffle, I have control issues, and shuffle leaves too much to chance. Case and point.
