Wearing Headphones In Public – Inconsiderate People Series

There is an etiquette to wearing headphones in public and that includes wearing headphones in school. There is one guy in my Mon/Wed college class who wears his headphones every day, but listens to his music so loud that he shares his music with everyone in the entire hallway.

It is especially noticeable in the quiet of the sociology wing and I have noticed the looks that the people throw his way as he sits there oblivious to the judgement happening around him. Either he’s an asshole and listening to his music that loud so he can get on everyone’s nerves on purpose. OR he is a moron and has no idea that listening to his music that loud not only negates the point of wearing headphones, but will cause him permanent hearing damage.

I have thought about tapping him on the shoulder to ask him to turn it down.  I am on the fence about how much I want to have him comply to polite social norms, and how much I would prefer he continue to damage his hearing. So far the latter is winning.

I wear headphones to listen to music all the time. However, growing up, my parents told me that if they could hear the music I was listening to, I was listening to it too LOUD.

Which brings me back to my pet peeve: Inconsiderate People. He listens to his music every morning and the experience is NOT private. I would prefer to have a choice regarding the thumping bass line forced upon me at ungodly hours of the morning. Going to class that early is hard enough without this douchebag making the experience completely miserable EVERY damned day.

To date no one has said anything, but that won’t last long. It may not be me, but someone will lose their shit and get all in his face about it. With any luck it will be someone with more fucks to give than me.

What's on your mind? Shout it out!
