Fairy Secrets & Lies – Fate: The Winx Saga on Netflix
Why do we listen to the opinions of critics? They routinely tank things that are beloved by the general public. Which should be evidence that critics have their heads so far up their ass it’s like they can’t sense things that are good because they are literally surrounded by their own shit. So does it make me a basic bitch that I like Fate: The Winx Saga?
I never even knew it was a technicolor cartoon on Nickelodeon, which all things considered, is probably for the best. Like with everything, when I want to know more, I’ve got to do research, so of course I Googled for more info.
Opinions, opinions…
I came across this article which was like, it’s not that good. At first, I misread the title, I thought they meant it was going to sizzle, I was intrigued. On second glance after reading for a bit, I realized the word was less complimentary, as it said the series was likely to fizzle. The writer was clearly not impressed. But why?

I don’t like people telling me what to do, or think. And it’s just one person’s opinion! Who knows what they actually consider to be good and entertaining?
For example, I think reality television is absolute shit, and yet, it’s very popular. It is the epitome of all that is NOT entertaining, and NOT good. It is what it is meant to be: cotton candy. Sugary fluff for the masses who don’t want to think about anything deep. Vapid. Shallow.
I dare someone to argue that reality television is more than. But I digress…
The article also said that the show was derivative of things like Harry Potter. I don’t think that is the case. The show has the familiarity of boarding school culture, which is not an American thing. Not unless you’re uber rich, and or grew up in New England where boarding schools, though not numerous, are certainly a thing.
The curious fairy…
Sure it has intrigue, the main character has a mysterious story-line, but any story where the character has a journey of discovery to make, and while on that journey also uncovers secrets, and lies, and evil, is going to feel similar.

It is what it is.
Like with all things, make up your own mind. 40% on Rotten Tomatoes. They also passed on Constantine giving it 40%, and that’s a good ass movie with a strong fandom. I mean Roger Ebert hated it, he’s a respected critic and clearly he knows shit all about things, RIP. I mean, he liked Home Alone 3.

There is this one thing I don’t like…
If I had one criticism of the show, it’s what happens in Episode 5.
*Spoilers WITHIN - read at your own risk*
The school ups the student’s training after incidents in the area, and dangers that are revealed after a human is killed. In previous episodes, there are students doing hand to hand combat training, and they wear combat ready clothes. Field pants/sweaters and boots. They look ready to become soldiers. When the training is altered to include the fairy students, they engage in the combat simulations, but they are wearing plain clothes. Cute shoes, skirts, leggings… it was fairly ridiculous. Pun intended. It made no sense, and it felt misogynistic and sexist because wouldn’t you know it, each plain clothes fairy was a girl paired with a male combat clothed “specialist”.
That’s like my only beef. How necessary is it to look cute when you’re supposed to be fighting evil creatures?

I binged the whole series and it surprised me. I certainly got into it more than Riverdale (which I abandoned after the first season) because for a YA focused show, it has a story and is more than about attractive people groping each other.

True to theme, every character has some lie or another that they’ve been told or tell themselves. I appreciated that the adult actors playing teenagers, didn’t overact their roles. There was a distinct lack of existential sighing or smoldering looks. And the main character though being manipulated from all angles and clearly just wanting to get to the truth no matter what it takes, is as careful as a teen-aged character can be while still being a brat.
I think I am going to be interested in seeing where they go with this for the second season considering what is revealed by the end of the season. Like with all things, check it out for yourself. Don’t listen to the hype or the downers. I am glad I made my own impression of the show.
