Thoughts and Ponderings

Imma Columbus This Day

Maybe it’s just my corner of Texas, maybe it’s the whole state (haven’t done the research and I am not really that committed so if someone wants to comment and let me know that would be great) but we aren’t getting Columbus Day off from classes. Not at the independent school district level and not my college. NOPE. It’s business as usual. Maybe that’s how it should be?

I got used to celebrating Columbus Day on the East coast. Enjoying the three day weekend, what used to be the first of the school year after Labor Day weekend,  it was an opportunity to either make the drive to visit my mother or for her to come down and visit me. It was super easy to do when I was only three hours away. It wasn’t hard but certainly doable even when I was 9 hours away. I love road trips! The cost of airfare, however, makes a three day visit prohibitively expensive. Oh well… Win some, lose some.

There were (are?) parades in my hometown for the holiday. Could it be because there’s a big Knights of Columbus building downtown? Maybe? I never really thought about it, but I wonder about it now. I took this day for granted. And now I miss it. Why is there no love for Columbus in this part of the world? It is a total bummer.

I could care less for Columbus the man. Full disclosure: I just want the day off. Not so I can celebrate someone sitting in an obviously occupied seat and calling dibs for eternity on it. No. I want an extra day to get caught up on my laundry, to sleep in, to kick back on my couch and watch marathon episodes of something on Netflix or Hulu+… is that too much to ask?!

Ugh. I’m gonna suck it up like the rest of the world and just deal with my regular day like everyone else. Unfortunately…

What's on your mind? Shout it out!
