Haze Gray Matter

I think the most irritating thing about my dear military husband is that he likes to pretend that I don’t know what he is up to. Let me explain: I took a short trip this past weekend to visit my mother. He was supposed to have been on that trip, but his ship’s schedule changed at the last minute so he had to stay behind to get underway while I was gone.

I left a small “honey do” list, and on it I requested that before he left the house, could he please take out the trash? Nothing major, I wasn’t asking him to redo my kitchen. Why is it then that I return home and all the trash is still in the house? To make matters worse, between his departure and my return, a friend of mine came over to house sit and watch my dog for me, so all this trash was laying around while she was there too!

I was embarrassed and upset. This might seem minor, but I have been with him all 10 years so far of his military career, and this is not the first time that his “Haze Grey and Underway” has undermined my ability to run a smooth household.

He seems to forget that the first eight years were spent as a dual military household, so he can’t pretend that I don’t know what’s up.  I do know that he did find time to vegetate on the computer playing his games and that he did manage to make a mess of our bedroom during his wait-till-the-last-minute packing frenzy which I attempted to avoid for him by trying to get him to address that he did need to locate all his underwear and socks days before I was supposed to leave. Despite my efforts, I just couldn’t get him to see the urgency of it all.

I also know that since I wasn’t home to basically nag him through his last moments in the house, he did whatever and then just took off leaving a wake of destruction behind. Why does he wonder how come our 6 year old son, who worships the ground he walks on, will not clean his room?! Five bucks says he wants to be just like daddy.

I am praying for improvement sometime during the next ten.
