Desperately Seeking Kitchen

I have a smallish kitchen now. I miss my kitchen back in Virginia. For someone who likes to cook, having adequate space for storage and prep is key. Unfortunately, that is the one thing this kitchen does not have, so I have to reinvent the wheel literally with this place.

It’s a challenge I hope I am up for. So far, I have been just making do while I regroup and strategize. Baking is a chore. About two weeks after we moved in, the wall oven started flashing a fault that would not go away.

Electronics suck when they break. I googled solutions on the net, and so far, every solution points at replacing the electronic board, something that I can’t see doing when we are just renting.

One day, the management might send a handyman to fix it. In the meantime, we have to keep it shut off at the breaker. Talk about a pain in the ass. So baking, warming things in the oven, cooking in general, is a chore.

I shouldn’t complain, I know there are plenty of people who are far worse off than I am, so I am grateful, but still annoyed. It would be nice to have appliances that work. It would be nice not to have to jump through hoops just to bake a pie or roast some potatoes. I don’t think that is too much to ask.

In the meantime, I am having fun with the crockpot and rocking recipes on the stove.

When I am not cooking, one thing I love about this area is the wider cultural sampling for food. So far, we have been to a Vietnamese restaurant, an Indian restaurant, and, of course, an Italian restaurant. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Also on my to-do list is finding some ethnic shopping centers for ingredients to round out my pantry. I like to explore the varied cuisines of many cultures.
