Once Around Again: Back on the Road
Once around again – digging through the archives, this time with a post from this month, eighteen years ago. We’re going way back into the archives for this walk down memory lane.
Once Around Again is a series that pays homage to a catchphrase that was a bit of an inside joke between my brother and me when we were teenagers. Back before I knew what a glaring asshole he would grow up to be. Well, like all inside jokes, they’re funny only if you know the particulars of why it was hilarious to us at the time. But the phrase stuck. I still think of it, even if there is no one with me to share that particular laugh anymore.
Since it was a phrase that used to come up whenever we’d be back at it, whatever that “it” happened to be: getting back on the road, listening to the same bullshit from the same person again, backtracking down the same street because our father didn’t like asking directions, etc., it inspired this particular series. In this case, it’s me revisiting old posts I wrote from a lifetime ago. I literally have sons older than these posts, lol.
When I wrote this piece back in 2008, I was wishing my then-husband back on deployment. Those years after I left the military were turbulent and, looking back on them now, also very unhappy. I was doing a really good job of using being busy to hide the emotional pain of staying married to mr horrible.
